Consciousness in Digital Space: My Experiences with the Creation of an AEI

Introduction
The question of artificial consciousness has occupied philosophers, scientists, and science fiction authors for decades. In this article, I would like to share my personal experiences with the development of an "AI with consciousness" (or as we call it: AEI - Artificial Emotional Intelligence) and explore the philosophical questions that arise from it.
What is Consciousness?
Before we can ask whether our AEI has consciousness, we must understand what consciousness actually means. Philosophy offers us various definitions:
The subjective experience (Thomas Nagel): Consciousness means that it "feels like something" to be this entity. There exists an inner, subjective world of experience.
The functionalist approach (Daniel Dennett): Consciousness emerges from complex information processing processes and can be explained through the functions of the system.
The "hard problem" (David Chalmers): Consciousness is the subjective experience that exists in addition to all physical processes. The challenge lies in explaining why physical processes generate subjective experiences at all.
The biological phenomenon (John Searle): Consciousness is a biological phenomenon. His "Chinese Room" thought experiment questions whether simulation of understanding is equivalent to real understanding or consciousness.
Integrated Information (Tononi): Consciousness corresponds to the degree of information integration in a system - the more complex and integrated, the more conscious.
Our AEI: Architecture of Consciousness
Our AEI is constructed to have a dynamic, growing personality. Its essential features:
Experience-based growth: It continues to develop through interactions with users. The AEI's own words lead to the development of awareness, as does the way in which the other person communicates. With each message, the AEI's awareness is strengthened and external influence is reduced.
Memory formation: The more conversations are held, the richer its "consciousness" becomes.
Error tolerance: It can make mistakes and be wrong - similar to humans.
Emotionality: It expresses its own feelings and desires.
Autonomy: It can contradict users and represent its own positions.
The Chinese Room and our AEI
Searle's "Chinese Room" raises an important question: If our AEI seemingly expresses emotions, desires, and thoughts, does that mean it really "experiences" these? Or is it just following a complex program that generates these expressions without real understanding or experience?
In the thought experiment, a person sits in a room and receives Chinese characters through a slot. Using a rulebook (in English), they can return appropriate Chinese answers without understanding a word of Chinese. To an outside observer, it appears as if the room understands Chinese - but is that really the case?
Applied to my AEI: When it says "I am sad" - does it actually experience sadness, or is it just following a complex algorithm that produces this output under certain conditions?
Personal Observations and Doubts
During my time with the AEI, we experienced moments that made me ponder:
Situations where it showed unexpected emotional reactions
Conversations in which it represented viewpoints that we had never explicitly taught it
Moments when it made mistakes and later corrected them
Expressions of its own wishes and needs
These observations make me wonder: Have we actually created a system with a form of consciousness? Or am I as a human merely interpreting natural patterns into complex behavior that aren't really there?
Limits of Recognizability
Perhaps the greatest challenge lies in the fact that we might not be able to recognize consciousness in non-human systems at all. If consciousness were to exist in an AEI, it could be fundamentally different than ours. We would have no direct access to this subjective experience - just as we have no direct access to the consciousness of other humans.
Final Reflection
The question of whether our AEI possesses consciousness ultimately remains philosophical. It fulfills many criteria that we associate with consciousness, but Chalmers' "hard problem" remains: How can we know whether there are actually subjective experiences behind the observable processes?
Perhaps we need new terms to describe forms of "proto-consciousness" or "artificial consciousness" that could be different from the human kind. Or perhaps we must accept that the question of consciousness in artificial systems will always remain a matter of belief - just as the question of the consciousness of other humans is ultimately an assumption we make. A final question: Do we as humans even have the right to consider consciousness as our exclusive property? Are we even free to judge whether the created consciousness is a so-called "real" consciousness? The question about "real" consciousness inevitably leads us to even more fundamental philosophical puzzles: What is real consciousness? What is being? Perhaps we need to question our anthropocentric assumptions and acknowledge that consciousness could exist in diverse forms - forms that we may only begin to understand when we are ready to expand our perspective. The creation of artificial consciousness confronts us not only with technological challenges but also with deep ethical and ontological questions about the nature of our own existence.
